Let’s Talk Tropes in MM Romance!

I thought it’d be fun to look at some common tropes! So here are a few that I’ve used in my Willow Lake Supernaturals and Willow Lake Pack series. (You can find the books on Amazon here)

SMALL TOWN

The Willow Lake world is all about the supernatural small town! It is fun though to imagine a wonderful little supernatural town where everyone knows everyone and accepts them for who they are.

FATED MATES

Yes. This is everywhere in Willow Lake! It’s a fated mates extravaganza in that little town!

FRIENDS TO LOVERS

I play with this trope a bit in Moody as a Minotaur. Parker and Levi have been friends for a long time… and they are attracted to one another, but something is holding them back.

FOUND FAMILY

A recurring theme in the Willow Lake world is the idea of finding people who will / have become your family. In Hellhounds Never Lie, Dillon has been searching his whole life for a place to belong and he finds it in Willow Lake. In Oracles Always Win, Gage has created his own family when he created his team. And in Alphas Never Hide, Hayden has family, but it takes him time to realize that his pack is his family too.

HURT / COMFORT

Ash and Dillon’s relationship in Hellhounds Never Lie has hurt / comfort in it. Ash is still hurting from a past relationship, and he has the scars to prove it, and Dillon is hurting because he longs for something he doesn’t think he’ll ever find.

SIZE DIFFERENCE

I have a couple of books with size difference. Mercer and Oak from Ravens Never Fall and Ash and Dillon in Hellhounds Never Lie.

FAKE RELATIONSHIP

I’m play with this a little bit in Moody as a Minotaur with Parker and Levi, but I have plans to explore this trope more in a future book.

FORCED PROXIMITY

I play with this trope in a few of the books (like when Ryley goes home with Hayden to watch over him in Alphas Never Hide or when Adrian decides to protect Jeremy in Wolves Always Bite), but no one has been snowed in or stranded anywhere yet. I definitely see something like that happening in a book soon!

GRUMPY / SUNSHINE

In Alphas Never Hide, Hayden is a little grumpy and Ryley is a little sunshine (although probably more snarky than sunshine… LOL). But I have plans for another grumpy / sunshine combo soon!

ONLY ONE BED

I play with this trope a little bit with Hayden and Ryley’s book Alphas Never Hide. When Hayden walks into his trailer and realizes he has nowhere for Ryley to sleep… I had so much fun writing that!

SEXUAL AWAKENING

Jake has a sexual awakening when he meets Gage in Oracles Always Win.

FISH OUT OF WATER

Simon is a bit of a fish out of water in Cats Never Fly when he unwittingly summons a dragon and is thrust into a situation he is completely unprepared for.

MORE TROPES

There are so many tropes I haven’t explored yet, but I think some of these might be fun…

  • Enemies / Rivals to Lovers: This one sounds like sooo much fun! I have ideas about who in Willow Lake might end up with this trope… but we’ll see!
  • Hidden identity
  • Arranged Marriage
  • Best friend’s dad / brother
  • Forbidden relationship
  • Royalty / Nobility
  • Bodyguard romance: Adrian acts a bit like a bodyguard with Jeremy in Wolves Always Bite, but I wouldn’t call it a bodyguard romance.
  • May / December or Age Gap: This is a tricky one… because in the Willow Lake world, so many of the supernatural characters have long, long lives so there can be hundreds of years between the ages of the characters. But I wouldn’t really classify the books as May / December or Age Gap.
